Somehow, 2018 Feels Different

Selfish Giving

2018 is only a few hours old and it already feels different to me. Ignoring the fact that I am still sitting in my front room writing a blog post right before it is “due”, and ignoring the fact that this will be the first time in 5 years that I haven’t taken a two week vacation during the holiday break, things really do seem different.

Set Goals for What Matters

Goals are powerful, especially if you choose only a few. A laundry list is almost impossible to stay focused on. But if you choose two or three realistic, specific goals, and write them down, you are likely to achieve them. But first, make sure you set goals for what matters most. If you’re not clear […]. Is Your Nonprofit Ready for Product Licensing?

Selfish Giving

ASPCA is a great example of a nonprofit that profits from product licensing agreements. Years ago when I was writing Cause Marketing for Dummies , Joanna and I had to write a short section on product licensing. I remember being hesitant to write about it because unlike just about every other topic in the book, neither of us had any experience with product licensing agreements.

How Not to Test Communication Volume

The Agitator

I’m a fan of M+R. Their free nonprofit tool shed is great for quick calculations for those who, like me, can’t do chi-square or t-tests, in their heads. Their yearly benchmarks are a must read every year. (And they are adding retention to it, which is a great addition.) They are also more open about sharing test results than most, knowing that we rise and fall as a community.

He's rich. Now what?

I've been getting the same type of question from a wide variety of nonprofit leaders in many different sectors. The question goes something like this: "This guy is rich. What's my next step?". Part of me wants to applaud them. These leaders are doing the hard work of trying to expand their fundraising. But most of me wants to scream. The assumption is there must be a perfect "thing" to do that will cause them to give money.

This is in large part because organizations face a greater tangible, incremental cost to mailing.

Increasing Donations: The Essential Ingredients of Effective Nonprofit Web Design

By Dishan Jay. Good web design is a bit like clean air. You never really think of it, until the garbage truck passes you by and you realize how indispensable it is. It’s often dismissed until lack of it becomes a hazard. The same thing happens with nonprofits and design. It gets overlooked, downright ignored in favor of something basic just to “get things out there,” because often“there simply isn’t a budget for fancy stuff.”.

Any discussion of metrics in The Agitator must include a nod to “ The Curse of Fundraising Innumeracy ” about an Agitator reader who tried to keep a straight face when someone said they had a 95% retention rate. What Fundraising Metrics Are Worth Measuring

Meanwhile, foundations must adhere to the ‘payout rule’ which refers to the fact that, by law, private non-operating foundations must distribute five percent of th
