Breaking Down the Latest Cause Marketing Research [Infographic]

Selfish Giving

Marketing research firm Toluna is out with new research on what consumers really think about cause marketing - which they nicely summarized in an infographic in Adweek. The research confirmed a lot of what I already thought was true about cause marketing, although one data point surprised me. I'm also becoming more skeptical of generational data. Are the boundaries between Baby Boomers, Gen X and Millennials really as pronounced as researchers thing they are?

Your Audience Isn’t Everyone

Ann Green

The board chair at a place where I used to work would often say, “We need more people to know about us.” Does that sound familiar? It’s tempting to cast a wide net so as many people as possible can find out about your organization, but that’s not a good strategy. Not everyone is interested in your organization and that’s okay. The key is to find people who are interested in what you do and keep them interested.

A Man Of Infinite Patience In A World Of Imposters

The Agitator

Roger surprised and impressed me yesterday with the incredible display of patience and tolerance displayed in his post, Donor Retention: Good News And Poor Excuses. The ‘good news’ in his post was that, according a Boomerang survey of 775 nonprofits, 67% are tracking their donor retention rate, as compared to 55% in 2014. That improvement moved Roger to write: “At last!

Here’s why you should remove the word "bequest" from your vocabulary

iMarketSmart

The word bequest sucks when it comes to generating planned gift revenue. Stop using it. Here’s why: No one uses this word with their family and friends so you shouldn’t use it with your donors… they won’t “get it” It reminds people about death and nothing scares people away from making planned giving decisions faster than thoughts about death.

5 Things Reporters Really Want From PR Specialists

Kivi's Nonprofit Communications Blog

Don’t frustrate the reporters you’re trying to reach. When you open your e-mail box, which messages are you most likely to open: generic messages from unknown senders or personal notes sent by someone you know? The answer to this question is obvious, right? You’re going to open the personal message first. And you’re more likely to trust that message than you would a message that comes from a stranger.

Three Elements of Transformational Fundraising

One of our most recent additions to the CausePlanet summary library is The Generosity Network by Jennifer McCrea, Jeffrey C. Walker and Karl Weber. If You Must Deal With The Boss And Board

The Agitator

I guess I just started out in a grumpy mood this week, on Monday implying that for most fundraisers, hanging on to their donors was too demanding, beyond their ability. Roger on Tuesday tried to find some good news in a Bloomerang study indicating that somewhat more nonprofits were monitoring their retention rates these days, an ‘accomplishment’ I treat as akin to tying your shoes before you run a race.

Why You Should Stop Emphasizing Tax Savings When Promoting Planned Gifts

iMarketSmart

A well-known speaker once led the opening presentation at the ACGA Annual Symposium right in my backyard— Baltimore, Maryland. In his presentation, he mentioned that about 2.5 million people died in the U.S. in 2012 with an estimated 6% (150,000) leaving charitable bequests. But, interestingly, out of those 150,000 charitable estates, only 2,225 (1.5%) were taxable as a result of being worth more than $5 million.

4 Nonprofits That Gamified Their Funding (and Tips for You to Copy)

NonProfit Hub

Nonprofits all have one thing in common: They need to raise money. There are some that do it better than others, and they’re usually the ones who manage to make the biggest impact. Reaching a larger audience is a key aspect of increasing donations. It doesn’t have to be huge donations, either. Even small ones that are made frequently can have a big impact.

How to discover planned gifts using interns because you can’t afford a telemarketing firm

iMarketSmart

1. Make sure the intern cares about your mission. 2. Have the intern view videos, read reports and talk to program staff (and beneficiaries) so they are familiar with stories about the impact your organization delivers. 3. Pull a list of longtime loyal donors (over 60 is preferable). 4. Write a letter to the donors but have the intern personalize and duplicate it, hand address envelopes, and mail them to donors letting them know the intern will be calling the following week.

[PODCAST] Being Direct in the Workplace is the Key to Success | Ft. Sheena Greer

NonProfit Hub

One of the first articles I wrote as Managing Editor of Nonprofit Hub was something about why I hate the nonprofit sector. Obviously I don’t hate the nonprofit sector as a whole, but there are definite things about it that drive me nuts. One of them is the inevitable propensity for pussyfooting. Sheena Greer, self-titled Chief Ass-Kicker & Crayon Evangelist at Colludo and our host, Randy Hawthorne touch on something very similar when they talk about how people in the nonprofit sector have th
