Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Bezos Day 1 Families Fund
$123.5 million to 40 nonprofit groups to bolster policy, advocacy, racial equity, child welfare, and family services that aim to prevent homelessness in 26 states and Puerto Rico.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$75 million over four years toward its new program to increase enrollment in apprenticeships, trade schools, and two- and four-year colleges among students in Washington state.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
$40.7 million in grants to artists and arts organizations in the Miami area.
The grants, which were announced during the annual Art Basel Miami Beach event on Monday, went to 21 arts and culture institutions, six groups of Miami artists and arts organizations that use technology to create new work, and 26 local leaders who were recognized for their work to support the arts community in South Florida.
ClimateWorks Foundation
$21.5 million to the Global Fertilizer Challenge to improve the development and use of fertilizer and address its effect on climate change, food security, and energy.
The Grantham Foundation, S2G Ventures, the Walton Family Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation also contributed grants toward the $21.5 million total.
George Gund Foundation
$19.3 million to organizations in the Cleveland area that advance racial equity, climate justice, and other program areas.
Among the total, $1.5 million went to the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation to support community development and equity in Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities.
Home Depot Foundation
$14.5 million to nonprofit groups that serve military veterans.
A grant of $2.5 million went to Semper Fi and America’s Fund to make home repairs and modifications for veterans with disabilities acquired during their military service.
Ruth Foundation for the Arts
$11.5 million to 138 arts organizations for core support, thought leadership, and regional and craft-based programs.
Dr. Phillips Charities
$10 million to the University of Central Florida to build a new facility for its College of Nursing on the same campus as the College of Medicine and the UCF Lake Nona Medical Center.
Colorado Health Foundation, the S. Clement Trust, and the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Colorado
$8.7 million to the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado toward its $20 million endowment campaign to bolster Latino communities and nonprofit groups in the state.
The campaign has received grants of $5 million from the Colorado Health Foundation, $2.7 million from the S. Clement Trust, and $1 million from the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Colorado.
Overdeck Family Foundation
$7 million over three years to Springboard Collaborative to expand a literacy program that helps teachers and parents work together to ensure kids can read on grade level.
The foundation also gave a two-year grant of $1 million to the EdTech Evidence Exchange project at InnovateEDU to increase the adoption of education technology by educators by collecting teacher feedback on how they use it in the classroom.
Ally Charitable Foundation
$5 million to Atrium Health to establish the Ally Charitable Foundation Workforce Development Center of Excellence and the Ally Charitable Foundation Workforce Development Scholarship Fund, both of which will help people from historically marginalized communities pursue careers in health care.
Ball Brothers Foundation
$5 million to 39 projects in Muncie, Ind., with a focus on school-counseling programs and outdoor learning at schools in the city.
Visa Foundation
$5 million to the Black Economic Alliance Foundation to enhance the Center for Black Entrepreneurship and its efforts to expand equitable access to entrepreneurship and develop Black business leaders at Morehouse College and Spelman College.
Zoom Cares
$5 million to 20 organizations worldwide that are working to advance environmental and social justice.
Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles
$2.5 million to 10 organizations in Los Angeles for local programs that focus on confronting hate and anti-Semitism, promoting mental health and wellness, strengthening and diversifying Jewish education and summer camps, supporting older adults, and creating meaningful volunteer opportunities for Jewish youths.
Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation
$2.4 million to revitalize Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods of English Avenue and Vine City.
The largest grant of $1.04 million went to the Westside Future Fund to build more affordable rental units for longtime community residents who are at risk of displacement.
Clif Bar and the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research
$2 million to Tuskegee University’s College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences to create an endowment to advance organic agriculture and farming practices.
Clif Bar gave $1 million, which the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research matched with an additional $1 million.
Norwalk Havoc Robot League
$2 million pledge to collegiate robotics teams and charities that promote the study of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Black Collective Foundation MN
$1 million to 30 organizations with Black leaders in Minnesota to back programs, organizational resiliency, and additional general operating support.
CareSource
$1 million to United Church Homes to develop a residential housing complex for people over age 55 who identify as part of the LGBTQA+ community in Dayton, Ohio.
New Grant Opportunity
Carnegie Corporation of New York is accepting proposals for projects that will increase understanding of the politics of nuclear-weapons policy in the United States. Think tanks, university-based institutes, and independent nongovernmental organizations are eligible to apply for grants between $100,000 and $500,000 each for nuclear-security research projects that run up to 24 months. Proposals are due January 15.
