One Thing Philanthropy Must Leave Behind—the Values of Extractive Capitalism

NonProfit Quarterly

Image credit: Photo by Ogulcan Ercal on Unsplash The values attributed to success under capitalism are not the same values that lead to equity and sustainability for society. The point should be obvious, but it is important to state it clearly. Capitalism values self-interest, competition, private property, and the accumulation of wealth (hoarding) for the individual over community and collective wellbeing.

Amy, I would add one additional way to help. Pray and recite Psalms. I know it might not be politically correct, but I believe the situation calls for turning to heaven for help. As a Christian fundraiser who has worked tirelessly to support and fund Israel for more than 25 years, my heart, too, has been ripped to shreds. So many innocent lives were brutally butchered for no reason other than they are Jewish.

Comment on I Stand with Israel and Why You Should Too by Jon Brandt

Amy Eisenstein

In reply to Geoffrey Close. I stand with Jews around the world in fighting antisemitism. I can’t stand with Israeli government and the extreme violence both before and after the Hamas’ horrific attack. Thousands of people, including children, have been killed, with far more Palestinians than Israelis. Both groups are violent. And nothing justifies the rise of antisemitism around the world and I am committed to speaking out against it.

Amy, Thank you very much for using your platform to share your views. This terrorism will never be justifiable! The attacks have shaken me more than I care to admit and I am dreading more awful news.

Amy, I was so grateful to see your post. Thank you for using your platform in this way. I stand for Israel! I will never attempt to be an expert on the Israeli/Gaza conflict but I do know right from wrong and what is occurring is so wrong. Israel does not want to obliterate Palestinians. Many Israelis and Palestinians live side by side. It is the extreme terrorist groups such as Hamas that want to wipe out Israel and all Jews.
