Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$300 million toward a new partnership that will back research and development for global health and make its findings accessible and affordable to people living in low- and middle-income countries.
The partnership will focus on solutions to address how climate change and infectious disease affect global health, and promote understanding of how nutrition relates to immunity, disease, and developmental outcomes.
Each grant maker has committed $100 million.
Otto Bremer Trust
$12.5 million in grants to organizations that enhance quality of life for residents of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Global Impact
$12 million through the VaxSocial Initiative to back seven organizations that are working to use social media to build confidence in vaccines.
Arnall Community Funds
$10.1 million to a variety of programs that prevent homelessness, advocate for criminal-justice reform, and provide services for children in the justice and foster-care systems in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
The largest grant of $8 million went to the Homeless Alliance to endow general operating support for the WestTown Homeless Resource Campus.
Prebys Foundation
$7 million to establish its Prebys Research Heroes program, which will make grants to medical-research projects led by women and researchers from marginalized backgrounds.
The program will award 14 grants of $500,000 over two years to researchers who are pursuing studies in Alzheimer’s disease, infectious disease, mental health, and liver, gastric, or pancreatic cancer.
California Endowment and the W.M. Keck Foundation
$6 million to Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science toward its $95 million capital campaign to build the historically Black medical school’s new Health Professions Education Building.
Each grant maker gave $3 million.
Lilly Endowment
$5 million to Duke University to renovate and expand the Lilly Library on the university’s East Campus.
The Lilly Endowment is a financial supporter of the Chronicle.
Weingart Foundation
$3.9 million to 25 nonprofits that advance community and economic development, civic and political engagement, and racial equity in Southern California.
Among the grants was $475,000 to the Orange County Immigrant and Refugee Liberty Fund to establish a fund that will give immigrants legal representation to fight deportation.
United Health Foundation
$2 million over three years to Native American Connections to expand access to behavioral and primary health care for Native Americans and people from marginalized communities in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
ABC Supply Co.
$1 million challenge grant to Homes for Our Troops to match gifts made during May in honor of National Military Appreciation Month.
HCLTech
$1 million to three conservation groups for projects to mitigate climate change and restore ecosystems and biodiversity across North and South America.
Argilando, in Brazil, received $500,000. No. 9 Contemporary Art and the Environment, in Canada, and the Longleaf Alliance, in the United States, each received $250,000.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation
$1 million to the Rothko Chapel to build the Forum for Community Engagement, a multi-use community and education space in the Houston chapel’s new Program Center.
New Grant Opportunity
The Public Interest Registry is soliciting nominations for its annual .Org Impact Awards. Cash prizes worth $10,000 to $50,000 each will recognize innovative nonprofit organizations and individuals working to make the world a better place. Each finalist organization will receive a grant of $2,500 this year. The award categories in 2024 are health and healing; diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental stewardship; hunger and poverty; quality education for all; community building; rising stars; and the .Org of the Year Award, which honors one organization with significant accomplishments. All nominees must operate a website whose domain name ends in .org to be eligible. Nominations are due June 19.
