Newsletter: GameStop Aims to Score $100K TODAY for Charity 🎮 ; At What Stores are Consumers Spending Money?💰; Nike’s Lesson for Nonprofits✏️
GameStop is uniting the gaming community TODAY to raise $100,000 to support Make-A-Wish Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. And I'll be watching it all on Twitter where they are having an all-day Twitter-a-thon. Here's how they describe the day:
For one day only, gamers can connect with their favorite directors, developers, designers and players at the top video game and collectibles companies to benefit charity during the GameStop Gives Twitter-a-thon,” said Eric Bright, vice president of Merchandising for GameStop... Join GameStop on Twitter starting at 9:30 a.m. CT and donate online at GameStop Gives.
Cool, I thought! "But will the tweet-storm raise any money," I asked a GameStop rep. We'll see.
"The majority of the funds we raise during this campaign with come from our stores for the simple reason the campaign runs all month long and we have more than 3,800 GameStop stores who are participating in the fund raising campaign," she said. "The Twitter-A-Thon is a one day only event."
Still, GameStop has over one million followers on Twitter. Surely, they can raise some money. I'll be watching. Want to join me?
Partnership notes
1. Who's working with Grocery Outlet? They have 300 locations and will build 30 more stores this year and 40 next.
2. The Chronicle of Philanthropy published a whole slew of articles on corporate giving last week. My favorite was this one on how impact, data and promptness led to a $100 million corporate gift.
3. Check out at which businesses consumers are spending their money. Should you be working with more jewelry and hardware stores?
4. Nissan Titan pickup truck owners say they bought their vehicle after seeing Titans helping in the community, such as during hurricane relief efforts. So now Nissan is partnering with Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross and National Park Foundation.
5. When a CEO or President asks you why they should publicly support a cause, share this article with them.
Marketing your cause
1. Nike's marketing move last week wasn't smart...it was brilliant. Professor Galloway explains in this two minute video. Nike traded older, poorer, rural consumers for younger, affluent, urban consumers.💥Some nonprofits should consider doing the same.
2. Nonprofits are always asking me about using LinkedIn, but I don't use it that much. It's boring! But you know who does: Neal Schaffer. I really respect Neal and he has a new, free book on how organizations can better use LinkedIn. I'm going to read it. Want to join me?
3. A new study that suggests that word-of-mouth (i.e. the dinner table, the back fence, the water cooler) make up the ultimate social network. But how do you generate WOM? I'm on it. I found a great, free webinar that marketer Jay Baer is offering! I plan on attending myself!
4. Stop thinking that you can't produce content unless it's beautifully designed and perfectly executed. You supporters are most interested in content that is accurate, useful and simple. For why corporate partners should share their nonprofit work stakeholders, scroll down to point #4.

Brain food
1. Traditional workplace giving isn't the future of fundraising. I think the United Way gets this. I'm not sure the Combined Federal Campaign does.
2. What would happen if you planted one tree every day?
