John Haydon didn't work in corporate partnerships and cause marketing. He was so much bigger than our little niche. John was a bonafide superstar in fundraising. He had tens of thousands of followers and was frequently ranked the #1 influencer in the nonprofit sector.

John was a speaker, consultant, blogger, podcaster and author. He was also a dad, brother, friend and fiancé. He was everything. He was my best friend.

Near midnight on Saturday and under the light of the full moon, John passed away after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Our friendship began a decade earlier in an unlikely place: Twitter. On Monday, I returned to the site to memorialize my friend...

1. Companies look for audiences to tell them what's good, popular and profitable in the world. Case in point. Seeing the press for Kansas City Chiefs 🏈lineman Derrick Nnadi, who paid for dog adoptions at a Kansas City shelterCoors Light offered to cover 1,000 adoptions across the United States. Oh, and those 109 dogs that Nnadi help get adopted? Celebrity chef Rachael Ray is giving all the new owners enough dog food for a year! The takeaway for you? Attract an audience and companies will find you. Interested? Read more here.

🤑 Marketing Your Cause

1. How Mark Horvath at the nonprofit Invisible People grew his YouTube channel from 40,000 monthly views to 40 million. Amazing!

2. Such a great article on how you need to offer VALUE with your content. Don't be just good, be good something.

3. Delta launches a new flight safety video....with Habitat for Humanity??? 🧐

📬 Reader Mailbag

I've been getting so many wonderful questions from readers lately I've decided to experiment with a new reader mailbag section in the newsletter. I'll highlight questions asked - and questions answered! - Joe

Here is this week's question. Can you answer it? Hit reply and respond and I'll share your comments in an upcoming issue.

"Have you seen corporations/brands collecting donations on behalf of a nonprofit online (not at checkout - just straight donations to a nonprofit). We’re having lots of partners requesting to do this, and it’s not jiving right from a tax-deduction perspective for the individuals donating. Wondering if you’re seeing this from others? Has it been successful? Could you point me in the direction of some resources around whether or not this is a legal approach?"

Question Answered: What Tools Do Nonprofit Teams Use to Manage Sponsorship Fulfillment? [I'm still accepting answers for this question, so send yours along!]

🧠🍌 Brain Food

1. Even flood maps can’t convince coastal residents that their homes will be underwater. 🌊People are persuaded by emotion not facts.

2. Unilever doubles down on purpose (because it works!)

3. Purpose vs. Cause Marketing. What's the difference? Now you'll know when people ask you!
