In the late 1990’s nonprofits began to launch websites, experiment with email marketing, and sign up for their first “Donate Now” service. Then, in the late 2000’s nonprofits embraced social networking sites, first Myspace and YouTube, then Facebook and Twitter. Now, in the late 2010’s, we’re on the verge of yet another seismic shift that will have a profound impact upon online communications and fundraising – the rise of digital payment systems.
Writing the only part of the email your donors might see: the email subject line Is your inbox filled with holiday sales, year end reminders, and charity appeals? It can be challenging to make your own nonprofit's emails standout! The email subject line. I’ll cut to the chase. People want to take advantage of opportunities more than they want to solve problems. Here’s how it works in fundraising. “Problem” messages: We need help. The water is dirty and undrinkable. Over 25,000 children are hungry. Too many homeless people are freezing. We are running dangerously low on blood. “Opportunity” messages: You can make a huge difference for Sarah.

Nonprofits today are increasingly asked to collaborate. Many fear that with the election results, there will be even greater financial pressure on nonprofits. The philanthropic community has long been calling for nonprofits to reduce the duplication of resources. Despite these pressures, rarely does anyone define what is meant by “collaboration.” Does it mean two nonprofit leaders meet for coffee?

After ten years of Agitator Christmases, we’ve never been able to improve upon this holiday message. With all your online solicitation programs firing away like an AK-47 on auto-pilot until January 1, fundraisers probably aren’t doing much heavy lifting today … unless it’s carrying in the booze for the office party. But maybe — over some spiked punch — you might contemplate and chat about your year’s performance — yours personally and your organiza
The way we do things in the nonprofit world often differs from the way the private sector operates. While there is good reason for nonprofits to have distinct business models, there are some things that the private sector does right that nonprofits could really benefit from by incorporating them into their own business models.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.
I’m always a bit baffled when I see fundraising letters that fail to take into consideration the following. After all, research by Professor Siegfried Vogele has clearly proven what people read and in what order. Here are the 6 most read parts of any major gift solicitation letter: The sender (firstly, the donor wants to see who sent the letter).

Two weeks from now, you’ll be picking up the pieces, trying to figure out what went right … or wrong. Assessing how well your last-ditch December fundraising went. Of course the most attention will go to dollars raised: a) against budget targets set for the year (and month), and b) year-over-year (hopefully growth). As you read this today, is that what you’re expecting?
Analysts are hailing 2016 as a “year zero” for virtual reality (VR) technology, thanks in large part to virtual reality cinemas that are opening around the world. Viewers can go inside special booths and choose one of three VR headsets. From there, they can become birds, fighter pilots or almost anything else the mind can dream up. It also helps that the cost to produce virtual reality content is dropping, making the prospect more feasible.

I rarely comment on fundraising businesses. I get plenty of e-newsletters and read heaps of blogs of such firms, often finding useful pearls of wisdom and, less frequently, hard data on successful fundraising strategies and tactics. These offerings (basically, business lead generators, about which I’m not complaining) provide some basis for separating the wheat from the chaff, but having been one of ‘them’ I’m hesitant to draw conclusions from what I see from a distance.
I suspect that most fundraisers think of donors who don’t renew or make subsequent gifts as having made a conscious decision to abandon ship, such as … My priorities have changed. I’m supporting other organisations in this field … you no longer make the cut. You did something I disagreed with. The reasons we suppose are at play we probably ascribe more to programmatic dissatisfaction of one sort or another — like the ones above — as opposed to service-related
In our last episode with Steven Shattuck , we discussed the importance of championing our donors in a way that makes them feel invaluable to our operations. We even found that depending on the level of donation, sometimes we treat donors differently – for better or for worse. The question isn’t always whether or not people not have enough money to give, but becomes more that they’re not being properly cultivated.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
