One of our goals in the MNA POD (Professional and OrganizationalDevelopment) program is to make sure our programming centers belonging and equity. When we consider how to host events that uphold our values of community, agency, accountability, learning, and growth, we have identified four strategies to center equity and inclusion.
Like all practices involving symbolic equity, land acknowledgments at MNA have at times been performative, rushed, tokenizing, and misaligned with opportunities for education or partnership. Criticism of land acknowledgements nationwide led us to consider how MNA could approach this practice with an eye towards our values and members.
However, those progressive values sometimes rub against the tendency of leaders to enact traditional management and governance practices, particularly as the size, scale, and complexity of organizations grow. The increasing prevalence of staff unionization is evidence of these felt needs among staff.
That is how we deeply institutionalize values around giving, collective values around giving. We were getting calls from other sectors: education called us, arts called us, philanthropy called us. Let me be clear: if people want to give, any way they want to give, let’s create opportunities for them. How do we get this?
