My pal Dr. Russell James is at it again. This time, he researched what fundraiser job titles inspire more engagement, connectivity, and giving. According to James, “This study tests the impact of various fundraiser job titles on others’ willingness to contact the fundraiser to engage in giving-related discussions.” What did he find? Well, although it’s safe to say that many of us love our job titles, Dr.

Robert Antell and his wife, Marguerite, decided to make a break from the norm in their rural town of Perinton near the Canadian border in New York State. In 1970, the Antells built a home that most would call bizarre and others might call original. Their “Mushroom House” still stands today and is 4,200 square feet of sprouting concrete pods made to look like Queen Anne’s Lace Flower.

We’d like to think that all the generations of women and men who worked, volunteered, sacrificed and, yes, donated through all the decades to create last night’s landmark moment in American history are joyously celebrating wherever they are. We sure are! We’ll let the pundits and commentators deal with what Hillary Clinton’s nomination means in terms of the 2016 Presidential Campaign.
Here are some of the thoughts crossing your donors’ minds while you’re asking them to support your cause: Will they say thank you or just take my money and run? Will I now get flooded with lots of spam or junk mail asking for more money? Will they call and badger me for more money? Will they sell my name to another nonprofit that will bombard me with solicitations?
You can’t just add a “Donate” button to your nonprofit’s website and expect it to be successful. Join us this week for Writing a Donor-Centered Website with Tom Ahern. This will be the only time this series is offered in 2016. Many online gifts are impulse purchases. So any number of things can detract a potential donor from completing the donation: What you say and how you say it.
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been close to 10 years since Facebook first introduced the News Feed. And since then, Facebook has implemented over 30 major algorithm changes to determine what is prioritized on your Facebook News Feed. The most recent update this past June seemed like the biggest blow to nonprofits, as it was announced they would prioritize News Feeds to show posts from friends and family and less from pages.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.
I suspect that most of The Agitator’s UK readers read the fundraising wisdom of Ken Burnett on a regular basis, and have already caught up with his latest gem, Adventures in emotional space. This post is for all other Agitator readers out in the colonies. We can all use a reminder of the primacy of emotion in driving fundraising … and not just emotion on the part of donors, but equally importantly, on the part of those of us who do the asking.
Pok é mon GO has seen explosive growth over the past few weeks - garnering 21 million active users and surpassing Tinder in popularity. It’s being called the single biggest mobile game in U.S. History.
Flickr: OpenUniversity. How often have you banged your head against the wall because you just can’t squeeze any more from your existing team and budget? When you know what you could do, if…… There IS a way to move past this seemingly insurmountable barrier, and that’s enlisting your colleagues (start with staff, then expand to your board members, donors, volunteers, and program participants) as effective messengers.
Snapchat has been the talk of the town on social media for some time now, among other things that have popped up recently, like Pokemon Go and Stephen Colbert getting kicked out of the Republican National Convention. Until now, it probably hasn’t made a whole lot of sense for your nonprofit organization to download Snapchat because you don’t have the right audience to be reached via Snapchat; however, what I’ve found is that Snapchat is a vital asset — not to build a huge following with — but ra
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Although I doubt it’s intentional, far too many fundraisers spend far too much time and money biting the hands that feed their organization. It happens every day. Poor donor service. Lousy communications. Little or no donor recognition … sometimes not even a simple thank you. Of course this pitiful lack of concern for the donor is reflected in the equally pitiful retention rates of most organizations.
Thanks to guest blogger Mollie Katz, Multimedia Strategist at Mollie Katz Communications. In their day, legendary journalists like Ben Bradlee of The Washington Post essentially defined the day’s news for their audiences. But today it’s a different story—Increasingly, audience interests shape journalists’ decisions on what’s news. NBC , for example, is sharing viewers’ thoughts on the election anonymously, collecting them via text, phone, and Tumblr.
Recently I was interviewed by a woman named Mazarine at Wild Woman Fundraising ! You can hear the interview here. Here’s one big point from the interview I figured you’d want to read (in case you don’t have time to listen to the whole thing). Getting to know your supporters is a humongous key to success. Tweet this! If you really want to get to know them well, the best way to start at low cost is to simply ask them questions about themselves— preferably face to face or with a
Last week, we talked about the reasons nonprofits are failing at follow-through in Part I of the series. There are plenty of excuses for not following through on something when you work for a nonprofit. However, it’s time to combat those excuses. Check out these ways to make sure you’re getting from point A to point B with no detours along the way. 1.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
I can’t let Roger’s paean yesterday to pursuing one’s fundraising career in small nonprofits stand with no countervailing comment. I appreciate all the reasons why small is beautiful … although many times those reasons are given by folks who have no choice but to make the best of ‘small’ and find virtue in it. Yes, you get to wear all the hats at once … probably mastering none beyond a casual level, with growing frustration over the many opportunities yo
Time is running out! For organizations that receive federal funding subject to Uniform Guidance (UG), 2 CFR 200, the time to update procurement standards is rapidly approaching.
Most of us like to believe that we’d give to charity purely out of the goodness of our hearts. It’s also what we’d hope to be true of our donors. 100% altruism. Philanthropy without expectation of reciprocation. But the world doesn’t work that way. That’s why, as fundraising professionals, it’s a large part of our job to entice donors and incentivize giving.
