Today on CauseTalk Radio , Megan and I talk to Peter Strebel , Chief Marketing Officer at Omni Hotels & Resorts , about Say Goodnight to Hunger (#SayGoodnightToHunger). This action-triggered donation program feeds a family of four dinner for an entire week whenever guests book a stay directly at OmniHotels.com. Since the programs launched in June, Omni Hotels has donated 3 million meals.
But smart organizations are also planning ahead for another year-end tradition: increased coverage of charities during the holidays. When the first Salvation Army bell ringers start setting their kettles outside of local shopping malls, their chiming bells seemingly send a signal to editors and reporters that they should be covering what’s happening in their nonprofit community.

A coaching client just told me a powerful story of following up. For about six months, he was following up with three supporters. Each had made small donations in the past, less then $1,000 each. After about five months of following up, one donor said he'd make a gift "this quarter." The by "this quarter" he meant by the end of June. Well June came and went.

This session will walk you through how one CEO used generative AI, workflow automation, and sales personalization to transform an entire security company—then built the Zero to Strategy framework that other mid-market leaders are now using to unlock 3.5x ROI. As a business executive, you’ll learn how to assess AI opportunities in your business, drive adoption across teams, and overcome internal resource constraints—without hiring a single data scientist.
A key driver of donor commitment and loyalty is the donor’s perception of just how effective your organization is in achieving its mission. No one buys a Chevy because GM needs the money. By the same token, donors don’t give because your organization has a need to balance its budget or meet your quarterly numbers. Although many think otherwise, donor expectations aren’t usually driven by policy or programmatic details.
This week’s cartoon from Marketoonist made me laugh out loud. You know why. Replace the Sale bag with a Donation Jar or a Volunteer Sign-Up form or any other nonprofity transaction tool and it’s pretty much the same cartoon, right? But you don’t have to feel that way, and you shouldn’t, if you follow the approaches we talk about here all the time at Nonprofit Marketing Guide.
So many of you have reached out to me recently in total panic, asking for guidance because you’re stressed to the max by pressures of launches, giving day, and year end. Then there’s the biggest one—the pressure of unrealistic expectations (especially your own). I know because I live it too. Methods for addressing those pressures are you- and organization-specific, but some game-changing strategies work across the board.

The clock is consistently and constantly ticking – 86,400 times a day, to be exact. Despite the seemingly monumental amount of seconds, there never seems to be enough time in a day. Time is a precious resource for fundraisers. So when it comes to divvying up your time among donors, it’s crucial to maximize every second and every minute. There’s nothing worse than wasting precious time on a prospect that will never be fruitful.
That’s the message of my favorite Tweet this week. It’s from @AdrianSargeant and attached to it is this marvelous piece of correspondence. Not only is it evidence of Adrian’s point that there’s hope for us all, it’s equally a reminder of the danger that springs from believing the safest course of action lies in sticking with the status quo.
How was your week? Relax and have some Mixed Links with me… Emily Peck tackles the recent Clinton controversy and workplace culture at large in Working While Sick Isn’t a Hillary Thing. It’s an American Thing. Joe Garecht at the Fundraising Authority is hosting this month’s Nonprofit Blog Carnival and is looking for submissions on The Best Tips for Amazing Non-Profit Newsletters.
Facebook recently changed its algorithm again. This can have a major impact on your work if you run a nonprofits Facebook page. TechCrunch has been studying these changes over time and shared some useful tips on how to keep your nonprofit's Facebook page engagement up.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.
People are constantly looking for jobs at businesses that best fit them while employers are simultaneously looking for employees that fit their needs. Traditional hiring processes aren’t always the ideal way to complete the process. How much can somebody really learn in a few interviews? It’s time to turn to alternatives whether you’re looking for a job or new employee.
Earlier this week I took my traditional pot shot at #GivingTuesday , suggesting one might better focus on real fundraising, like growing a monthly giving program. Somewhat to my surprise, those who commented seemed to share my skepticism. Some favored a ‘#MonthlyGivingMonday’ But I was really taken by a great idea suggested by Claire Axelrad, a jujitsu idea really — instead of resisting and griping about #GivingTuesday, why not hijack it?!
Why do organizations in the UK, Canada, and Australia raise more money with bequests than we do in the US? Fundraising expert Tom Ahern believes that the answer may be as simple as not having a marketing plan to ask for those bequests. A simple plan might include: Writing a vision statement that lets donors know how their bequest will help the organization for future generations.
When I first got into professional sales at Washingtonian Magazine I was taught that the only way to really sell anything was to get face-to-face with a prospect. That was back in 1988 and I’d agree that, back then, it was true. But today, almost 30 years later, I think face-to-face meetings for most situations might be overrated. I don’t think you necessarily have to meet with every donor assigned to you.
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Marc Pitman has spent years consulting with nonprofits to get their boards and staff excited to raise money for their organizations. During that time he’s come to find that it’s not all roses with nonprofit leadership in our sector. Building upon his research, he developed the Nonprofit Sector Leadership Report 2016. What he found was that these negative experiences weren’t outliers, and that our sector has a lot of work to do.
Two emails arrived today in my in-box, competing for attention. The first was the first exhortation I’ve received so far to get ready to participate in this year’s Giving Tuesday. It was from MobileCause (who usually sends cool stuff) inviting me to a webinar titled “Supercharge #Giving Tuesday” The second was my regular ‘fix’ from fundraising creative maven Jeff Brooks, titled “How to move your donors to monthly giving — and why it matters so much

Trust leads to commitment. Then it leads to retention, loyalty, major gifts and planned gifts. Here are 7 ways to build trust so your fundraising efforts work better: 1. Make sure your mission is clear so people will know what you do with their money. 2. Be “real”, transparent, open and honest about your organization’s efforts (both the successes and failures). 3.
Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.
If you’re not paying close attention to how your nonprofit is doing fundraising, your time and effort will be drained before you know it. Maximizing impact doesn’t have to exhaust those resources of yours. That’s where engagement fundraising comes in; letting nonprofits know that they can work smarter, not harder. Engagement fundraising makes use of research and technology to help you make the most of your time.
Seth Godin, in a post titled Erosion , correctly notes that “While it’s tempting to imagine that the world changes via sudden shocks, that our culture is shifted by dramatic changes in leadership, that grand gestures make all the difference … “It turns out that our daily practice, the piling up of regular actions, the cultural practices and biases that we each choose—that’s what makes change happen.
Wealth screening your data is a good idea! My firm doesn’t provide that service but there are plenty that can help you to determine who among your donors has the capacity to give more. But here’s what fundraisers tell me they felt once they got the wealth screened data: They felt that they got too much data. The data was overwhelming. The data lacked prioritization (they didn’t know who to call first).
