Are we just hardwired to give 2%? They’ve come to expect a level of access, professionalism, and convenience. And they expect the exact same level of convenience from the causes they support. Nonprofit giving in America has been stuck at 2% of GDP for 45 years. What is causing this? Is it the tax code? It’s keeping us stuck.

In the USA, the number of registered 501(c)(3)s jumped from around one million in the mid-1990s to over 1.5 That is the equivalent of 801 new 501(c)(3)s being created each week…for more than a decade! And “501(c)(3)” is only one classification of nonprofits. Personally, I am excited for this new level of accountability.

Standing in the future, we can look back and see that one of the things we had to collectively affirm is that we are done with calling people out. Calling out leads to cancel culture; cancel culture is ineffective and divides us further. We’ve all experienced this resistance. Yes, we really mean no matter what.

Humans are hardwired to communicate by story. So, too, we are hardwired to think in terms of the hero story. As fundraisers, what exactly do we have to offer donors? Their gift goes away. Even if we call it an “investment,” it doesn’t give them any financial benefits. (Or Or at least none worth the cost of the gift.). The heroic donor.
