FREE On Demand Webinar. Long annual reports just don’t make sense for most nonprofits now. With the advent of the mobile technology, our attention spans have dropped to the point that a goldfish can focus better than we can. There are so many distractions – email, Facebook, Twitter, etc, etc. We are constantly jumping from one thing to the next. People can’t focus on what they actually care about let alone on a long, boring annual report.
Crowdfunding is a term you hear thrown around in both the nonprofit and for-profit worlds these days, but few people have really grasped—and put into practice—exactly what it is. The way I’d define crowdfunding is with these three words: online social fundraising. Accepting donations online is not really innovative anymore, to be honest. We all know about online fundraising at this point and agree it’s necessary.
I’ve had the privilege of volunteering and sitting on over 10 nonprofit boards as a member of my community. As I’ve transitioned into becoming a nonprofit professional the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to assemble a board of my own—well, two actually. Since Nonprofit Hub has become its own 501(c)3, the staff has been able to come down from the ivory tower and actually live the life of a nonprofit professional.

This session will walk you through how one CEO used generative AI, workflow automation, and sales personalization to transform an entire security company—then built the Zero to Strategy framework that other mid-market leaders are now using to unlock 3.5x ROI. As a business executive, you’ll learn how to assess AI opportunities in your business, drive adoption across teams, and overcome internal resource constraints—without hiring a single data scientist.
Brand begins with people. And one of the industries that best understands this is the hospitality industry. They embrace the idea that everyone within the company—not just front of the house—is responsible for the brand. And you know we’re on board with that. Human Resources is the business of attraction, selection, and retention of internal […].
I just pulled some preliminary data from our 2017 Nonprofit Communications Trends Report Survey. Staff from about 400 nonprofits have participated so far ( add your voice now , please!). About 35% of participants say that the “extent to which strategy drives our communications work” is either somewhat better or much better. That’s the good news!
If your organization’s advocacy mission is directly related to or affected by the results of the 2016 elections, I hope you’re in the mail, on the phone, online and meeting with your donors right now. Don’t wait. Don’t sit around in endless meetings and plan. Just get out there and ask for help. Give your donors and other supporters the opportunity to take immediate action and become involved.

There are a whole bunch of so-called “marketing companies” out there that say they help nonprofits get more planned gifts. I have a lot of issues with these firms. Here’s why: 1- Too often they seem to be too interested in selling cookie-cutter websites, spam emails, and printed newsletters than achieving real results. Here’s the problem with this is: Planned gift websites don’t get much traffic (rendering them relatively useless).
Good news for nonprofits. Apple just announced that Apple Pay will now allow nonprofits to use the service for donations. Apple used to ban iOS apps from using Apple Pay to collect funds, meaning that charities needed to use third-party apps or outside services to process donations. Now, nonprofits can incorporate a donate button that processes transactions directly.
How’s everyone holding up out there? Let’s come together and share some Mixed Links… Please take a moment to share your experiences as a nonprofit communicator in our annual (but completely revamped) Nonprofit Communications Trends Survey. . Sarah Durham talks about Managing through Game-Changing Moments. The Nonprofit Blog Carnival is asking for submissions on Why do YOU give, how does it make you FEEL, and how could your experience as a donor be improved upon?
Want to stand out in the flood of emails, direct mail and other post-election communications? Just pick up the phone and talk to your donors, members and supporters. A great use of the phone in this ’emergency’ climate is the Telephone Town Hall. A wonderful opportunity for everyone to gather and experience the camaraderie of being part of a cause.

For many nonprofit organizations and NGOs, managing grants and monitoring projects with spreadsheets and manual processes feels familiar—but is it holding your organization back? As funding requirements become more complex and stakeholder expectations for transparency grow, relying on outdated methods can lead to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and compliance risks.
The mid-level donor is often forgotten and left in a middle child-like limbo. They’re not treated the way they want or the way they feel like they should be treated, which leaves them not giving as much to your organization as they’re capable of. The mid-level donor is defined differently for every organization, but typically looks like someone who gives more often than once, but isn’t a recurring donor yet, or isn’t giving enough to be considered a “major donor.”.
When I first came up with the term engagement fundraising it was because I was a pissed-off donor! I wanted the charities I cared about most to treat me better. I wanted them to be more respectful of me. I wanted them to send me messages that were relevant and interesting to me. I wanted to receive those messages at the right times. I wanted the organizations to recognize my wants, needs, desires and interests as well as where I was in the consideration process for making a gift.
Could your annual report fit right in with this scene? It’s time to update your approach. If you’ve heard me on an annual reports webinar any time in the last decade, you’ve heard me say some version of this: It’s OK to go short and stop publishing the donor list. Seriously. Now that I am actively advocating for very short annual reports , I’m hearing that the donor list is the last hurdle that is stopping otherwise rational communications and fundraising profession
I just read an article worrying about fundraising prospects in the post-Boomer world. Worryingly, it cited the Blackbaud study estimating that Boomers and older adults account for 69% of giving in the U.S. … and of course with the sub-text: they’ll start dying. There’s plenty of stuff to read about that particular Armageddon, so I won’t go there today.
Your financial statements hold powerful insights—but are you truly paying attention? Many finance professionals focus on the income statement while overlooking key signals hidden in the balance sheet and cash flow statement. Understanding these numbers can unlock smarter decision-making, uncover risks, and drive long-term success. Do you really know what good donor service looks like? I sure hope so, because as we’ve reported before , nearly 20% of all donors who drop out quit because of lousy donor service. Consequently, any organization serious about improving its retention rates had better be deadly serious about the quality of donor services it provides. Sadly, this essential ingredient in the retention recipe gets short shrift in most organizations.
Giving Tuesday is 12 days away. Are you ready? After several days of reflection, including a perhaps alcohol-fueled weekend of deep angst (or maybe glee), you’ve had a chance to absorb the meaning of President-elect Donald Trump for your organization, its mission and its fundraising needs. Now it’s Monday. Time to grab yourself by the shoulders, slap cold water in your face, gulp a strong coffee … and show up!
