Paul started the National Women’s Party after the 19th Amendment was adopted, believing that without a political organization’s leadership that could use the newfound legal clout, women’s concerns would never be taken seriously by politicians. It was a failing of the prevailing leadership to think they had won. How right she was!

The Civil Rights Movement also made me aware of the gendered discrepancies in leadership and set me forth on my career goal of gender parity, because I saw the women doing most of the necessary slogging hard behind the scenes work while men almost inevitably assumed the high profile leadership roles.
