The phrase “culture eats strategy for breakfast” is often true – certainly there are situations where strategy is consumed by culture – but strategy and culture are not mutually exclusive. I also had done some work facilitating leadership development programming with women of color leaders, specifically Black women who were leading organizations that used community organizing as a strategy. I’ve been doing social justice work for over 20 years now. There’s not just this one way we need to pursue racial justice here in the US.
The increasing numbers of people of color in these leadership positions has been a visible sign of the sector’s equity growth spurt. These assets go beyond experiences of oppression or marginalization to include the connection, meaning, and joy these leaders can draw on from their respective cultures and communities.
If one organization anticipates a leadership change they can consider managing succession through a merger. Some feel that staff should not know until the ink is dry but key managers will be involved in integration planning and, depending on the size of the organization and the culture, this is a judgment call.
Since physical health issues and emotional stress commonly contribute to burnout, look for opportunities to build a healthy and sustainable work culture.
